Project:

Geohazard mitigation and fish passage remediation after a massive landslide blocked the migratory path of several species of wild salmon, threatening potential species extinction with an estimated economic industry impact of
$3 billion a year.

Work Site

  • 100m tall 90o slopes
  • working above and at riverbank of class 5 whitewater rapids

Scope

Geohazard mitigation including check scaling, rock bolting, slope meshing, trim blasting, fish passage remediation including drilling, blasting, hydraulic rams, air bagging. Rescue service, helicopter coordination (CDFL/HETS)

Method

The unpredictability of the initial slide event, coupled with the urgency to protect wildlife in an extremely difficult access and high risk environment presented unique challenges. Massive coordination between many complex stakeholders, need for immediate deployment, extremely technical rope access work, complex and high risk work environment, dynamic scope with many elements only confirmed once on site

GRA pioneered new techniques for fish passage remediation throughout the project, only possible through the expert utilization of modern rope access techniques

GRA was best suited for this project due to our proven ability to perform advanced rope access, a diversely qualified team of geohazard mitigation technicians, a fleet of modern rock moving, blasting, drilling equipment, and expertise in problem solving experience

Results

GRA created a safe work environment at project initialization, created fish passage to allow spawning salmon to pass obstruction
